The physics of Morality

My darling 12 year old son, a beautiful young soul with an inquisitive, thoughtful and questioning mind came up with this interesting phrase. We saw the movie together (see previous post) and started to discuss Fascism and Communism, and ended up with talking about how human nature fucks up every good theory that people come up with, trying to fix this world.
His mind is so open to ideas, every day new questions are asked, answers and mysteries come and go, worlds are being discovered at every turn.
I love witnessing this process. I feel privileged to be part of it and I hope to never stand in his way.

The Secret In Their Eyes

Just saw this fabulous Argentinian film tonight, it is written in the good old Latin story telling style, with twists and turns, lives and loves lost and found, accompanied by the most important thing - Passion.
There were so many quotes worth remembering, it's beautifully written and delivered. I don't remember them and don't have the script, but one thing stuck in my mind, and forgive me, I may be paraphrasing here: There is one thing we can't change, one thing that we love the most, that gives meaning to our lives and that is Passion.

To Be a Woman

"To be a woman is something so strange, so confusing and so complicated that only a woman could put up with it". Soren Kierkegaard.
Wasn't he smart and handsome?
(I stole this from today's Globe and Mail Thought Du Jour, just had to share it because of course it makes total sense to me).

Stranded

We tend to put global issues that don't concern us out of our mind, go on with our daily lives and at the most say - I'm glad this is not effecting me.
I have a habit of tuning out the news. It's an inherent legacy of living in a place where news, bad news, infiltrate your daily existance, where you need to spend much needed energies in putting up mental barriers and block the bad news so life can actually go on despite what's around you.
So when a stranded friend on route, who's flight was canceled because of the volcanic ash that's spreading across the north Atlantic, called me this morning, I felt bad for her, and at the same time more connected to what's happening in the world today.
We managed to make the best out of this curious situation, happy for a surprise visit and a rare chance to catch up. Others are not so lucky.
Perhaps it's a mean thing to say from the comfort of my own home, but I like it when Mother Nature shows us what she's worth. A lesson in humility is good for us humans.

Shakespeare's Legacy

Can be found in the most unexpected places.
Last night, driving home and listening to the radio, my ears fell upon a piece of music that inspired me. It doesn't happen often enough. It turned out to be part of the score to a film - vampire parody of Hamlet, composed by Sean Lennon.
Click on the title to listen to it - it was Hamlet's Theme.

Afternoon Among The Flowers

Allan Gardens is a gem. I used to spend many hours there with my young son many years ago, it was our refuge. A place to feast our eyes on colour during the long winter gray months, a place a kid can run around and his mother can read a few pages or talk to strangers.
Today we wondered in, sat on a bench, enjoyed the scented warm air and the abundance of blooms all around us. The sun came in through the glass roof and we wasted an hour away there so easily.
I should go there more often.
These Jade flowers are so curious and seem unreal. I have no idea what they are but I always look for them there, never seen them anywhere else. The look like dragon's claws.

La Danse - Frederick Wiseman

I just saw this 3 hour documentary film about the Paris Opera Ballet. It's a masterpiece of film making. The camera captures the dancers mastering their craft, the historical building and everything that goes on in it, the changing light over the city, the art of choreography. It is dance-filming at it's very best.
Click on the post title to get to an reinterview with the director.

Third Time Lucky

Obviously I have nothing better to do than keep on posting today. This is a record for me, 3 in a row. But I couldn't resist. Here's a joke for the holidays, curtsy of my dear sister:

After the holiday dinner, the 2 couples split – the men to smoke on the balcony, the women chat in the kitchen (probably clearing the dishes – editor’s note).
One woman tells the other:
We had sex yesterday. It was a disaster. My husband came home from work, had dinner in 3 minutes, we had sex in 4 minutes, 2 minutes later he was snoring in my ear. How was your evening?
The other tells her story: It was fantastic. My husband asked me out for dinner and let me choose the restaurant. We walked home after dinner, a lovely one hour walk. When we got home he lit some candles and we fooled around for an hour, then had amazing sex for another hour at least, and in the end, imagine that - we even talked for an hour.

The smoking husbands on the balcony are having the same conversation.
The first husband: We had sex yesterday. It was amazing. I came home from work, dinner was already made, I finished it in 5 minutes, we fucked for 5 minutes, and I fell asleep right after. Simply incredible. How was your night?
The second husband: It was a catastrophe. I came home from work to find there was no electricity so I had to take the wife to a restaurant, she insisted on choosing. It was so pricey I had no money left for a cab so we had to walk home. When we got there the electricity was still out so I lit some candles to be able to see what I’m doing. I was so upset it took me an hour to get an erection, and another hour of fucking until I managed to finish, it was very frustrating. After all that I just couldn’t fall asleep and she kept on yakking for an hour until we finally got to sleep.

Oh What Good Friday

Out and about, in my short skirt and new boots I'm in love with. Having coffee under sunny skies, feeling like a tourist in my very own city.
Aren't they spiffy, my boots? I got them at my favourite women's consignment shop - Second Nature, naturally. The skirt too, just so you know.
